Books That Inspire, Educate & Challenge
Amazon & Goodreads Reviews
The author’s thirst for adventure was definitely a factor in keeping this book a page-turner that read more like a work of fiction than a memoir. It was made even more meaningful because I had been a coworker with the second son.
What makes this good is that the author does not self glory. It is written like working internationally is like walking your dog--just a part of life. That is what is so shocking, that these events became so normal that, while amazing to the reader, this agent remains focused on his task at hand. Very interesting to see into the mind of an agent.
This is a fun look at life in the Diplomatic Security Service. Starnes does a good job of illustrating the wide range of duties a typical DSS agent could expect to encounter. A history buff and proud Texan, Starnes gives brief overviews of the issues and countries he is stationed in, but this is not a great work for serious academics or historians. Enjoyable nonetheless!
